Today we practiced covering a square cake with fondant and learned techniques to achieve clean, sharp edges. Working with square cakes requires careful smoothing and trimming to keep the sides straight and the corners crisp, and we focused on those steps to improve the finished look.
We also explored stenciling to add decorative patterns to the cake surface. Stenciling provides precise, repeatable designs that complement fondant-covered cakes and give them a professional finish.
In addition to covering and decorating the cake, we modeled a set of small fondant animals. Each figure was shaped and detailed by hand to add charming accents to the cake. The collection included a bunny, an elephant, a mouse, and a piglet — each designed to be simple, expressive, and suitable for placement on a small or medium-sized cake.
The techniques covered—smoothing fondant for straight edges, trimming excess, and applying stencils—are useful for both beginners and more experienced decorators who want neater results. With practice, these methods help create cakes with a polished, professional appearance.
By combining precise fondant application with stenciling and simple modelling, you can create delightful, well-finished cakes. These small decorating skills make a big difference in the overall presentation and are great building blocks for more advanced designs.
