Now they were also bringing (even) babies to Him that He might touch them, and when the disciples noticed it, they reproved them. But Jesus called them (the parents) to Him, saying, Allow the little children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for to such (as these) belongs the kingdom of God. Truly I say to you, whoever does not accept and receive and welcome the kingdom of God like a little child (does) shall not in any way enter it (at all). Luke 18: 15-17 Amplified Bible
After spending a lot of time with young children, I’ve come to understand why Jesus said that anyone who wants to enter the kingdom of God must be childlike. Observing little ones reveals simple, powerful qualities that point us back to faith, trust and joy. Here are five lessons I’ve learned from the children in my life:
1. They forgive and move on quickly. A child can be furious one moment because they didn’t get their way, and a minute later they’re laughing at something new. They rarely hold grudges the way adults do.
2. They carry an easy joy. Childhood is often the happiest season of life. Children seem naturally inclined toward delight; they don’t linger in worry the way grown-ups often do.
3. They remain close after correction. When I correct my children, they show remorse and want to draw near afterwards. They don’t nurse offense; instead they seek comfort and reassurance of love.
4. They are eager learners. Many adults stop being teachable, but children are born to learn. They remain curious, ask questions, and absorb new lessons readily.
5. They are open to faith. When taught about God, many children accept spiritual truths quickly and earnestly strive to live them out.
I want to grow more childlike every day. It’s remarkable how much we can learn from these little people who still seem so close to the wonder of life. Don’t you sometimes wish you could reclaim that childlike simplicity and trust?
