A little bright cherry syrup from maraschino cherries enhances the ruby color and adds a hint of fruitiness without making the cocktail overly sweet. The result is crisp, colorful, and very drinkable—one of my favorite simple rum cocktails to make for special occasions.

Fresh muddled strawberries pair beautifully with rum. Use your preferred rum—spiced or white—since both complement the berried flavors and citrus. The lemon juice brightens the drink while the sparkling topper adds a celebratory fizz.

Pick Your Favorite Rum For This Festive Valentine’s Rum Cocktail

Choose the rum you like best for cocktails. Spiced rum brings warm vanilla and caramel notes, while white rum keeps the drink cleaner and lighter—both work well with fresh strawberries and lemon. Try what you have on hand to see which profile you prefer.

If you enjoy rum smash-style drinks, you might also like other fresh fruit rum recipes such as strawberry or blueberry rum smashes—simple, bright, and perfect for sharing.

Rim options: rub the glass rim with a lemon wedge for a light sugar coating, or dip in a thin layer of corn syrup for a heavier, more saturated sugar rim. Either method adds a playful visual and sweet bite to each sip.

Muddle Fresh Strawberries For your Valentine’s Day Rum Cocktail

Start by quartering two large, ripe strawberries. Place the pieces in a mixing glass or cocktail shaker and muddle until they’re fully crushed and juicy.

I like using a bottled sparkling pomegranate juice for sweetness and fizz, then finishing with a dry rosé to balance the drink. Serve chilled.
