We all recognize the yellow double arches: the salty fries, the Big Mac, the Happy Meal. McDonald’s is one of the most widely known fast-food chains in the world, with nearly 40,000 locations from Finland to South Africa and Mexico to Japan. Each restaurant serves local variations, but they all build on the same core menu of burgers, fries and familiar classics.
Starting in the 1950s as a small burger-and-fries restaurant in California, McDonald’s has expanded dramatically and introduced many enduring items over the years, such as the Filet-O-Fish, the McRib and the Egg McMuffin.
At its heart McDonald’s remains a burgers-and-fries business, so the menu has traditionally been limited for vegans. In many countries vegan options are scarce or require modifications. What can a vegan reasonably order at the world’s most popular burger chain?

Vegan items available on the McDonald’s menu
Despite the breadth of the McDonald’s menu, only a small selection is suitable for vegans without changes. Many items contain meat or dairy, or are cooked in oils or batters that include animal-derived ingredients. A few items are vegan as served, some can be made vegan with simple substitutions, and others can be ordered a la carte.
McDonald’s tested the McPlant burger made with a plant-based patty in 2021 and 2022, but after limited success in the US those trials ended and no plant-based meat remains widely available in the United States. Non-dairy milk alternatives are generally not offered at US locations, which limits vegan coffee or dessert options. Additionally, many salad options that once could be adapted for vegans were removed from US menus in 2020.
Below is a concise list of McDonald’s items that are generally vegan or can be made vegan with minor modifications. Note: cross-contamination risk is common in fast-food kitchens, particularly around fryers and shared equipment, so those with severe dairy or egg allergies should take care.

Why aren’t McDonald’s fries vegan?
Fries are a signature item at McDonald’s, and in many fast-food restaurants fries and hash browns are naturally vegan. At McDonald’s the issue is how the items are cooked. Although the potato ingredients themselves do not contain animal products, the oil used in many locations is flavored with a natural beef-derived flavor that includes milk proteins. Historically McDonald’s used beef tallow until the 1990s, then switched to vegetable oil blended with natural beef flavor, which makes fries and hash browns unsuitable for vegans in those markets.
The presence of milk proteins in the flavoring and the shared frying process means fries and hash browns cooked in that oil should not be considered vegan. In several international markets, however, fries are cooked in wholly vegetable-based oils without animal byproducts and are therefore vegan.
McDonald’s international locations are leading the way
While US menus remain limited for vegans, a number of McDonald’s chains abroad have introduced plant-based options and vegan-friendly menus. The McPlant launched in the UK in 2021 and expanded across parts of Europe with dairy-free cheese and vegan mayonnaise in some markets. Plant-based burgers now appear on menus in Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Austria and other countries.
Some countries have gone further: Germany has introduced plant-based McNuggets made with wheat, corn and pea protein in a tempura-style batter, and other locations offer items like the Vegetable Deluxe, Veggie Dippers and a Spicy Veggie wrap. In many of these international markets the fries and hash browns are also cooked in non-animal oils, making them vegan-friendly.
There are no confirmed plans to roll out broad vegan menu offerings across the US, but the international momentum suggests the company could expand plant-based options more widely in the future.
The McPlant burger is available in several countries across the UK and Europe, but after limited testing in the US the McPlant was discontinued there in 2022 and is not offered on US menus.
In many markets McDonald’s fries are not vegan because they are cooked in oil that includes natural beef flavoring containing dairy. Several international locations use vegetable-only oil blends and offer vegan fries.
Hash browns in regions where the frying oil contains animal-derived flavorings are not vegan, even though the potato ingredients are plant-based. In some countries where non‑animal oils are used, hash browns are vegan.
McDonald’s baked apple pie does not contain eggs or milk, but it may include L‑Cysteine, a dough conditioner that can be derived from animal sources such as feathers. Whether this is acceptable to a vegan is a personal decision.
