The Most Refreshing Drink Of Summer

Yuzu, the fragrant citrus fruit from Japan, is the star of this Cranberry Yuzu Martini. Shaken with cold vodka and a splash of cranberry, it becomes a light, bright cocktail perfect for hot summer days. Fresh lemon and orange juice with a hint of lime add balanced acidity, making this martini easy to sip. The recipe below includes directions for making a single cocktail or a batch for a gathering.
I first encountered yuzu cocktails at a Japanese restaurant in downtown Chicago. The fruit has a distinctive citrus aroma and a smoother, less sharp acidity than many other citrus fruits, which makes it an excellent match for vodka-based cocktails.
As a longtime fan of lemon drop martinis and classic cosmopolitans, I developed this drink as a hybrid of those flavors enhanced with yuzu. The result is bright, slightly sweet, and wonderfully refreshing.
This cocktail is ideal for entertaining—I plan to make a large pitcher for a Sunday family get-together. Below the recipe card you’ll find notes on sourcing yuzu concentrate or syrup if it isn’t readily available at your usual grocery store.

Yuzu Concentrate
I typically purchase yuzu concentrate from specialty suppliers that ship nationwide. You can also find yuzu syrup from cocktail ingredient brands and some specialty food retailers. Many liquor stores with a curated cocktail section, Asian markets, and larger grocery chains carry yuzu products in the Asian foods aisle. If fresh yuzu isn’t available, yuzu syrup or concentrate is an excellent substitute and preserves the unique citrus character.
If you prefer to keep a bottle at home for cocktails, look for a concentrated yuzu syrup or juice labeled for mixers—these provide consistent flavor and are easy to measure for single drinks or batches.

Get Artsy With Your Garnish
This Cranberry Yuzu Martini is simple to garnish—one lemon slice is all you need for a classic presentation. For a more creative touch, consider edible dried flowers, a sprig of lavender, or a rosemary sprig. Each option adds aroma and visual appeal and can subtly complement the drink’s citrus notes.

A Perfect Pairing
For a delightful happy hour, pair this Yuzu Martini with a savory appetizer like a whipped Parmesan and honey pecan cheese dip. The salty, creamy dip contrasts beautifully with the martini’s bright citrus flavors, creating a balanced and enjoyable combination for guests.
