Date-Sweetened Avocado Chocolate Mousse
It’s rare to find a dessert that’s both indulgent and nourishing, but this avocado chocolate mousse checks both boxes. Rich, creamy, and chocolate-forward, it uses ripe avocados for a silky texture and a single Medjool date to impart natural sweetness. Dark chocolate contributes depth and aroma, while cocoa or cacao powder boosts chocolate intensity without added sugar.
This mousse comes together in about ten minutes with a food processor or high-speed blender. It’s ideal when you want something elegant yet simple — no baking, no eggs, and minimal cleanup. Serve it chilled with fresh fruit or toasted coconut for contrast, or spoon it directly into small dishes for an easy family dessert.
What Makes This Chocolate Mousse Healthy?
Using avocado replaces heavy cream or egg-based mousses, adding heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and a velvety texture without an overt avocado flavor when small to medium avocados are used. Replacing refined sugar with a Medjool date offers natural sweetness plus a bit of fiber, while high-percentage dark chocolate gives antioxidants and a rich cocoa profile. Choosing plant-based milk and dairy-free chocolate keeps the recipe vegan and gluten-free.
Because the recipe is flexible, you can control the texture and sweetness to match dietary needs and preferences. Start with the base amounts and adjust milk or chocolate to reach pudding-like or more aerated mousse textures.

Ingredients
- 2 small to medium ripe avocados, pitted and peeled
- 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate or chocolate chips (60–70% cacao), chopped or broken into small pieces
- 3 tbsp unsweetened cacao or cocoa powder
- 1/4–1/3 cup milk*, dairy, soy, or almond; use half & half for creamier
- 1–2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/8 tsp sea salt
- 1 small soft medjool date, pitted and broken into pieces
- Fresh fruit, for garnish, such as cherries
Instructions
-
Chop the chocolate and melt it gently: microwave in 15-second increments, stirring between each, until the chocolate is just melted and smooth. Alternatively, melt over a double boiler.
-
In a food processor or high-speed blender, combine the avocados, melted chocolate, cacao powder, milk, pitted date, vanilla, and sea salt. Blend until completely smooth and creamy with no avocado or date pieces remaining. Scrape down the sides as needed.
-
Taste and adjust: add a little more milk for a looser, pudding-like texture or more cacao for extra chocolate intensity. Serve immediately for a softer texture, or chill for 30–60 minutes to firm up into a more mousse-like consistency. Garnish with fresh fruit or toasted coconut.
Notes
*Milk amount controls texture: start with 1/4 cup and add more if you prefer a creamier, pudding-like result.
**If your Medjool date is firm, soak it in hot water for 15 minutes to soften before blending.
Tip: Use small to medium avocados for the most neutral flavor. Overripe avocados can make the mousse taste slightly more avocado-forward; balancing with higher-percentage chocolate helps mask it.
Variations: Stir in a tablespoon of nut butter for extra richness, or add a pinch of espresso powder for deeper chocolate flavor. To keep the recipe vegan, use plant-based milk and dairy-free chocolate.
Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. The texture will thicken when chilled; gently stir before serving.
