Homemade Funfetti Sugar Cookies: From Scratch Recipe

Funfetti treats always make me smile. The bright sprinkles, the simple sugar cookie base, and that nostalgic flavor are hard to resist. I haven’t met many people who don’t enjoy a cheerful Funfetti cookie.

Funfetti dough with sprinkles

If you don’t have a boxed Funfetti mix on hand, you can easily make these cookies from scratch. Essentially they’re soft sugar cookies with colorful sprinkles folded into the dough — simple, fast, and irresistibly fun.

This dough looks so pretty with the specks of color. I’m tempted to collect more specialty sprinkles, but standard jimmies from the grocery store work perfectly in this recipe.

Mixing sprinkles into dough

The baked cookies are slightly crisp around the edges with a tender, chewy center. That contrast is what makes them so enjoyable—crispness where you want it and soft, buttery texture inside.

My little taste tester couldn’t wait to grab one as soon as I finished photographing them.

Ingredients

  • 2 and 1/8 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla just until combined.
  3. Add the flour, baking soda, and salt, mixing until just combined. Fold in the sprinkles gently—avoid overmixing so the dough stays tender.
  4. Shape the dough into balls and place them on baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  5. Bake for 11–12 minutes, until the edges are set and lightly golden. Allow cookies to cool slightly on the sheet before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling.
