Halloween decorations tend to fall into two categories: dramatic and spooky, or simple and sweet. With young children at home, I prefer decorations that are cute and family-friendly rather than frightening. A quick trip down the Halloween aisle turned into an enthusiastic haul—my husband Jose was amused when he opened the trunk and found pumpkin dolls and little birds spilling out. On my mantel I combined a bright orange garland with a few bird accents and a skeleton doll for a playful nod to Halloween. I kept the display grounded with a wooden bowl holding five mini orange pumpkins. The result feels seasonal and charming without going overboard.
