Unusual After Christmas Buys
One year, during my after-Christmas shopping trip, I was surprised by what I found. I hadn’t planned on hunting sales—I didn’t need anything—but I was out and about and couldn’t resist a clearance aisle. I walked away with some unexpected bargains that many shoppers might not think to look for. Even for someone who enjoys deals, these finds felt a little unusual.
First, I found toothpicks. It sounds odd, but I’d just run out and needed more. Tucked among the holiday clearance were Christmas-themed toothpicks. One decorative package was the size of three regular boxes and cost only $0.24. The toothpicks came in a round, festive container that I could reuse when giving cash gifts the next year. I planned to roll the money and place it inside—the container was the perfect size and made a cheerful, ready-made presentation.
I also picked up a pair of 7½-inch scissors—very nice scissors—for $0.60. They were on clearance because the blades were decorated with snowflakes, but otherwise they were like any good pair of scissors. Practical, well-made, and a great price for an everyday tool.
Finally, I bought regular-sized boxes of Kleenex tissues for $0.25 each. These had Christmas prints on the boxes, which didn’t bother me at all. Tissues are a household staple, so getting them at a deep discount felt like a smart move.
I realize these purchases sound quirky, but I enjoy finding useful bargains that others might overlook. I often wait until just before or right after New Year’s to score steep discounts—stores are eager to clear holiday inventory and you can sometimes find items marked down 75% to 90%. If you wait that late, some items may already be gone, but you’d be surprised at what still turns up.
Happy hunting! Jill
PS. If you need a wedding gift, consider buying a tasteful assortment of Christmas decorations. It’s a thoughtful option for couples who seem to have everything or when you’re unsure what to give. I received decorations as a wedding gift once and appreciated them—packaged in a plastic holiday tote, they make an attractive and practical present.
