I made a cozy hat with ear flaps for my friend Bridgette’s little boy, Ethan, who’s currently dealing with another ear infection. A snug hat that covers the ears seemed like the perfect comfort and protection—both practical and sweet for a small child. Knitting for a little boy was a lot of fun: the playful shape and details came together quickly, and I enjoyed choosing colors and textures that would suit him.
To get a few good photos before sending the hat off, I bribed my model with fruity flakes from Trader Joe’s. It worked well enough to capture the hat worn and in action. I’m also planning a blue version for his older brother, but without the little eye embellishments—something a bit simpler for an older kid.
Although my model wasn’t very willing at first, I ended up naming the hat after C. She has a funny way of describing a frog: instead of “ribbit,” she says “yippit.” That charming quirk made the name stick—sweet, personal, and memorable.
